2011 Dodge Durango R/T Hemi RWDWhereas its Jeep cousin perpetuates that brand’s dirt fetish, the Durango pursues sport in a different discipline. The two trucks’ suspension layouts are the same, but the Dodge is longer than the Jeep by a full 10 inches, with an extra five between its axles. Additionally, the Durango’s shock and spring rates are stiffer, and it has larger anti-roll bars. The R/T further stiffens the shocks and springs and lowers the ride height by 0.8 inch. Like the Heat and Citadel trims, the R/T includes 20-inch Dodge wheels.
All that stiffening paid off. The Durango is a handler, with minimal body roll—particularly for something so tall. It’s also very well balanced. Note that the RWD’s 50/50- and AWD’s 51/49-percent front-to-rear weight distributions are the sort of figures that get us excited about sports sedans. There’s a touch of understeer at the limit, and a delightful enthusiasm for rotation, which is easy to control and rein in with the all-wheel-drive system or prolong without it. The AWD R/T proved to be slightly better on the skidpad, where we recorded 0.81 g of stick compared with 0.79 g for the rear-driver.

Chrysler is taking a page from the insect world with its latest set of high-performance machinery। Just as the bright yellow and black motif of a bumble bee is meant to warn potential predators that they might get stung if they come too close, the new 2012 Charger SRT8 Super Bee and Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket feature Stinger Yellow and Pitch Black paint schemes to signal their ill intent.
Included in the Charger Super Bee package for 2012, in either yellow or black motifs, is a full sticker and stripe package highlighting the 3D helmeted bee logo along with five-spoke aluminum wheels with black painted pockets. Inside, the cloth interior is punctuated with yellow and silver striping and stitching. Subtle it is not.
Similarly, the Challenger Yellow Jacket is covered in various coatings of yellow and black, both inside and out, with the addition of a new Yellow Jacket logo. Both models come equipped with Chrysler's venerable 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine that puts out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The Challenger is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic; the Charger offers only the auto.

Here's an odd rumor floating around the cyberether: Despite the fact that Dodge has previously said that the next-generation Viper won't arrive until late 2012 as a 2013 model, reports are surfacing indicating that the automaker may display the vehicle at a charity event in Miami next month. According to Top Speed, Dodge will pay a visit to Ride and Smiles at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The charity allows children who suffer from chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, Crohn's disease and Colitis to ride along with current NASCAR drivers around the 2.3-mile road course in some of the hottest cars on the market right now.
Top Speed reports that one of the vehicles in attendance will be the next-generation Viper, though no source has been given for that information.
Far be it from us to rain on that parade, but a small charity event in Florida seems like an unlikely spot to unveil the new face of the Dodge halo car. Perhaps they'll show a teaser image or a mule? Earlier reports have indicated that the 2013 Viper would first be seen at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, which would seem to be a more fitting venue. Stay tuned.

As you may already be aware, there is no official production car record at the Nürburgring. That hasn't stopped well-meaning automakers from warming up the great German marketing machine in an attempt to outdo previous marks set by their competitors, and that includes the fine folks at Dodge.
Way back in 2008, Dodge shipped one of its Viper ACR coupes to the 'Ring with the goal of setting a blistering time. Suffice it to say, the outing was a complete success. For quite some time, Dodge claimed with a time of 7:22.1 that it held the fastest lap time of any production car around the famous circuit.
Since then, a number of manufacturers and machines have bested that still-stellar time, notably the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (7:19.63) and more recently the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition (7:14). Now, according to a new forum post by Viper Club of America president Marv Spatz, Dodge Viper owners can cheer the return of the crown, because a Viper ACR has reportedly just reclaimed the title with an unofficial time of "7:12 and change."
Keen enthusiasts will note that the Dodge Viper is no longer in production, so SRT sourced a pair of brand-new 2010 models from Tomball Dodge of Texas before having them prepped for action by Mintgen Motorsports, a shop just down the road from the Nordschleife.
No word yet on who was behind the wheel or how many shots at the record they took, but we have a feeling that once the results are certified, all that information will be released in a hail of press releases, in-car videos and so on. Some might argue that the Dodge Nitro was ready for replacement, oh, about the day after it was first released back in 2006. If that's the case, then Dodge's midsize sport utility vehicle is certainly well past its sell-by date now that our calendars tell us we're sitting in 2011.
Apparently, nobody knows that truth better than Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne, who told reporters at the Detroit Auto Show that the Nitro and its platform mate, the Jeep Liberty, are "the most significant hole in our product portfolio."
Noting that "it needs to be replaced," Marchionne suggested that a decision on a replacement for the Pentastar's uncompetitive midsize 'ute platform will be made in the next 40 days... though there's no indication whether that replacement will come from Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler or one of the other brands currently under the Fiat umbrella.
We also can't yet say whether the new SUV will be built at the Toledo North Assembly Plant like the current Nitro and Liberty, or whether Chrysler will use Fiat's C-Evo architecture as initially speculated.

Dodge seems eager to inject a shot of sportiness into any model it can. The redesigned Avenger is a model that could certainly use the help, thus the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T seen here. While we would love to see an SRT-tuned version of the sedan (or a better sedan entirely), the R/T touches are a good start.
Rather than focusing efforts on the 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, the engineers at Dodge have elected to fiddle with the suspension. Roll stiffness, strut damping and spring rates have been increased both front and rear, while the rear stabilizer bar has grown from 19-millimeters out to 21-millimeters.

Though it's cleverly disguised as an automobile, don't be fooled. The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is the world's ultimate portable smoke generator.
The fact that it can pull double-duty as a method of transportation is nothing but a quirky side benefit to its purpose in life. Consider it a value-added feature that helps justify its seemingly high $45,000 price tag.
It's really quite ingenious. All that's required to create your own massive plume of thick white smoke is premium-grade gasoline and two 245/45ZR20 tires, both of which are readily available, and both of which are consumed in roughly equal quantities. The actual process of making the smoke-screen is so simple even a caveman could do it. One step: Mash the throttle pedal to the floorboard. Done.
Strangely enough, during our First Drive of the beast, we found out that it's possible to do other things with the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. For instance, with a modicum of restraint at the specific point at which your right foot comes into contact with the throttle pedal, you can drive the 392 in a straight line. Equally as surprising, at least to those who know anything about classic muscle cars, the Challenger is even capable of traveling in directions other than forward, and for more than 1,320 feet at a time.
We're just as shocked as you.

Challenger SRT8? A Challenger SRT10, as long as someone else is paying the fuel bill.
Such sentiments are obviously not in sync with all consumers' attitudes, considering the current popularity of V8-powered muscle cars. The Challenger SRT8 has been selling well in top-line SRT8 trim and anticipation for Chevy's upcoming 2010 Camaro is high, while Ford's Mustang continues to attract buyers in all trim levels. Yes, also in V8-powered GT trim and especially Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT500KR guises.
These last two models make a stunning 500- and 540-horsepower respectively, which is substantially more than their pony car rival from Dodge, at 425-horsepower, or the expected 422-horsepower from the Camaro SS. Does this mean that Mopar will up the ante with a special higher output model of the Challenger? If Chrysler's skunkworks SRT division had any say in the decision, it would be a collective thumbs up, business case or not. And to prove this point the team concocted a one-off Challenger with Viper V10 power dubbed Challenger SRT10.Image via Wikipedia

It was a no-brainer from the beginning, especially given that the Viper's 8.4-liter V10 had already been sandwiched into the engine bay of an original Challenger and shown on the auto circuit a number of years ago. That car didn't feature the revised engine, however, making 600-horsepower and 560 lb-ft of tire smoking torque, or for even more important the modern independently sprung undercarriage with specially fitted Bilstein shocks to make the most off all the power and upgraded four-wheel discs to improve stopping power.
The Dodge Challenger SRT10 Concept, shown to SEMA participants this week, features '70 Hemi Cuda style “shaker hood”, giving the big lump some breathing room, which sticks out of a lightweight carbon fiber hood. The rear deck lid is carbon fiber too, contrasting beautifully with the Tornado Red paint scheme.
The SRT team has added carbon fiber trim inside to spice up the look, enhanced by a Viper-like red starter button to give the car a race-ready appearance.
Will Dodge build it? There are no doubt many, cash in hand, that would say they'd be crazy not to, but the car business isn't quite that simple anymore and therefore it might not get the nod. Then again, Chrysler did name it the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT10 Concept, giving it a model year that's different than the year it's hitting the show stand. Either way, kudos to the SRT team for dreaming this one up.

After seeing the Dodge Avenger rally car prototype hit the gravel hard, we were left wishing it would one day see competition. Unfortunately, that model was just an exercise. The 2012 Avenger R/T, however, is very real, and will be on display in New York this week.
Offering an upgraded, stiffer suspension, 283 horsepower at the crank of its Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6, and a host of unique appearance upgrades, it's the sportiest Avenger you can buy. The key upgrades to the suspension involve a total roll stiffness increase of 18 percent, with 17 percent stiffer front springs and 12 percent stiffer rears, plus a larger anti-roll bar in the rear and upgraded dampers to handle the extra rate.
The Pentastar V-6 needs no upgrades to generate its 283 horsepower, but it still manages 29 miles per gallon in Avenger R/T trim.
On the outside, the Avenger R/T gets a body-color dodge grill, black headlamp surrounds, a "war paint" R/T decal on the front quarter panel, a spoiler, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, R/T badges abound, with a center-mounted tach relaying the rpms, SRT-inspired brake and gas pedals, and a six-speed automatic--though no mention of paddle-shift ability. All Avenger R/Ts will come standard with a Boston Acoustic stereo and 30-gigabyte hard drive to complement the touchscreen entertainment center.

Fiat's EcoDrive, introduced at the Geneva International Motor Show this week, is built on top of the Blue&Me technology developed with Microsoft Corp. and launched two years ago to wirelessly connect mobile phones, iPods or MP3 players to a range of Fiat autos.

"This is the first time a standard car meets a computer," Fiat Automobiles SpA CEO Lorenzo Sistino told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "It's the first step of a new era. It has been two different worlds. Only in Formula 1 race cars do the computer and the car talk to each other. Now, on a standard car, the car and computer are in touch.''

Fiat's Blue&Me voice-activated entertainment application, which runs about $380 (U.S.), is available on recent models such as the Grande Punto and the remake of the classic 500. Last year the company introduced Blue&Me Nav, a system that costs about $668 and uses satellite-navigation capabilities to report accidents triggering air bags to emergency services while a concierge service calls the driver. If the driver does not respond, emergency services are dispatched, as with General Motors' OnStar system in the U.S.

In the United States, Ford Motor Co. launched Ford Sync, its version of a voice-activated in-car communications and entertainment system for mobile media powered by Microsoft Auto software, last September. Like Blue&Me, it lets drivers use voice activation to wirelessly connect their mobile phones and media players to the car system.

Ford also has said it will build on Ford Sync to provide an emergency service and an automotive diagnostic system in North America that keeps track of when a car needs an oil change or a tuneup, said Martin Thall, the general manager of Microsoft's automotive business unit.

"In North America the applications are more toward safety and security, while in Europe they are looking at emissions and navigation," Thall said. Fiat doesn't sell its cars in the United States.

As part of Fiat's Blue&Me package drivers also can choose to communicate their driving habits directly to the insurance company over a chip the automaker can activate.

While having a chip record one's driving habits might give pause, Fiat notes that the services are chosen by the buyer and are not automatic. The insurance program, for example, can be useful to a city-dweller who seldom drives but is charged urban rates. The system would allow the insurance company, which is Prudential in the case of the Fiat program, to verify actual mileage and set insurance rates accordingly.

Fiat's next step on the technological highway is EcoDrive, which will be launched with the 2009 Grande Punto onwards with upgrades free on all models integrated with Blue&Me.

EcoDrive will track data from a trip that is recorded by the car and can be downloaded directly onto a USB key. The information then is uploaded onto a personal computer and analyzed by a Fiat program, which will tell the driver his emissions level on the trip and make recommendations for improving efficiency. For example, a driver might be given braking or uphill driving tips, or reminded to maintain a constant speed on the highway or to drive in the highest gear possible.

"Driver behavior can have a dramatic effect on emissions, reducing them up to 20 percent in urban areas," Sistino said.

Future applications of the technology will include two-way communications to and from a vehicle, allowing a server with information from, say, a transportation department, to inform the car about a traffic jam up the road and provide an alternative route over the navigation system, Thall said.

Another way of tracking traffic backups could be by monitoring mobile phones, and if a lot of cell phones are stationary at one spot that could well indicate a snarl, he said. Chevy tahoe grille.

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea's largest automaker Hyundai Motor has reached a deal with its union to end a protracted dispute which has cost more than 600 million dollars in lost production, according to the company. ADVERTISEMENT

Some 95 percent of the 45,000 union members voted on the deal covering working conditions and wages and endorsed it by a 54-43 margin.

Since early July workers have been staging sporadic walkouts to press their demands. The union has gone on strike every year but one since it was founded in 1987.

"This year's negotiation was tougher than ever as we had some difficult issues to resolve," a Hyundai Motor spokesman said on Friday.

"We will continue our efforts to improve labour-management relations and establish a mature negotiating culture by further developing a spirit of mutual understanding and conciliation between the two sides."

Under the deal, the company will abolish its all-night shift system in September next year.

It also agreed to raise the monthly base salary by 5.61 percent and pay a bonus equivalent to three months' salary. Workers will also receive a lump-sum payment of three million won (almost 2,600 dollars).

The company's second-quarter net profit fell 10.6 percent year-on-year despite record sales, due to foreign exchange losses on debt repayments.

I've been watching these TV ads with T. Boone Pickens extolling the virtues of running cars on natural gas with some bemusement. I absolutely share his enthusiasm for energy independence, and I see his point about natural gas. We have lots of it here (it's our second largest natural resource), it's safe, it's cheap (the current national average price is just 58% that of gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis), it burns clean producing less critical greenhouse gasses than gasoline or diesel, and ordinary engines can be comparatively easily fitted to run on natural gas.

The Pickens Plan (pickensplan.com) envisions constructing a network of wind farms located right up the middle of the country (his site describes the Midwest as "the Saudi Arabia of wind") to replace the 22% of our electric power currently supplied by natural gas, so that the gas can be diverted to transportation uses. By his accounting, this could trim our foreign oil demand by 38%within 10 years, given sufficient political will and an investment of $1.2 billion in wind turbines and power-transmission infrastructure (paid for in part by a reduction in the $700 billion annual bill for foreign oil).

But today, of the reported 7-plus million natural-gas vehicles on the road, only about 120,000 of them are in the U.S., according to Natural Gas Vehicles for America. That's largely because of the 1100 or so of the nation's natural gas fueling stations, only about half are open to the public, and very few of these are co-located in one of the nation's 117,000 gas/diesel stations. That's why most of the natural-gas-powered vehicles here are taxis, street sweepers, Zambonis, city buses, garbage trucks, school buses, delivery vehicles, airport shuttles, and forklifts -- all limited-range vehicles running local routes near a central office and refueling station.

I recently sampled a Honda Civic GX, which is the only natural-gas vehicle a normal civilian can buy -- and it's sold only in New York and California. It's rated by the EPA as the world's cleanest internal-combustion vehicle. At $25,760, it costs $1540 more than a Civic Hybrid and runs just about exactly like a "normal" LX or EX Civic sedan. Except that the pressurized cylinders containing the natural gas eliminate the fold-down seat option and reduce the trunk volume to a tight 6.0 cu ft.

The 3600psi tank holds the equivalent of 8.0 gal of gas, which theoretically provides a range of between 192 and 288 miles, presuming you could use every bit of the natural gas and achieve the EPA city/highway numbers. But let's forget the highway number, because the refueling stations are too far apart to contemplate long-highway drives. The max useful range observed by myself (and Consumer Reports) was more like 150-180 miles of city driving. Kind of like an electric car.

The solution to the availability issue is an in-home refueling station that connects your car to the gas supply heating your home and water. These cost about $3500 (minus applicable tax incentives), meaning they're only likely to be installed by upper-middle-class home owners -- the same class of folk who are eagerly awaiting plug-in Chevy Volts and Priuses until Tesla builds a lower-priced EV sedan. Too few of these folks exist to alter the energy-use landscape in a meaningful way.

Seems to me the fastest route to energy independence is to tap our enormous coal reserves to produce gasoline and diesel via the Fisher-Tropsch process, augmented by as much cellulosic ethanol (and maybe methanol too) as we can distill. Natural gas will certainly have a roll to play, but I see it remaining in the commercial fleet realm for the foreseeable future.

Citroen's concept hopes to hypnotise

The French car makers usually pull out all the stops for their bi-annual home show in Paris and already we've been shown a few of the exhibits. The latest to break cover is a hybrid concept from Citroen called the Hypnos.

As the name suggests, Citroen hopes that its new crossover concept will be a hypnotic draw to the show stand, though the Hypnos' exterior style isn't as radical as most futuristic concepts, leading us to suspect that it hints at a new production model arriving in the next couple of years.

Show goers may well be shocked by the concept's interior though, as it uses bright colours and twisting shapes to define the cockpit, in what Citroen calls a "powerful sensory experience". It could be sensory overload though.

In keeping with the non-official 'green' theme of the Paris Show, the Hypnos features a hybrid drivetrain. It's thought that a 200bhp diesel engine will be allied with an electric motor-generator to return over 60mpg, with CO2 of just 120g/km.
